There is no way to end child labour without developing alternative sources of family income. We have provided women with start up funds for their own small businesses, and helped develop handcraft products and street sales outlets.
Angels
Our most successful income-generating venture to date has been the production of the small hand-painted plaster angels that gave us our name. In 1993 we created artisans out of "throw away street kids" and "unemployable" young mothers. These angel painters earned more than $30,000 in collective wages and produced 16,000 quality hand-crafted angels. Volunteers sold these angels in Canada and each box carried a hand-written message about the socio-economic conditions that force children into the streets and the dangers that await them there. Profits were returned to the community to fund construction of a modern elementary school.
