In 1997, with the help of grants from Rotary Westbank, Rotary International and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), Street Angels constructed and equipped a primary health care centre.
The Street Angels Community Health Centre provides free, accessible, front-line medical treatment to over 1,500 women and children annually. Hundreds of children have been vaccinated in public health campaigns and benefited from numerous health education programs provided by Brazilian volunteers.
When David Buttle ("Mr. Bongo"), Europe's largest importer of Latin American music, visited the Street Angels Project in Brazil he was so impressed that he returned to England and established Street Angels UK. In collaboration with several well-known Brazilian musicians, he produced a benefit CD. Proceeds from the sale of this CD went towards operating costs for the health centre.
The health centre is a collaborative effort. Street Angels UK and OrionHealth provide funds for two doctors and a receptionist. Street Angels maintains the building, oversees administration of the health centre, funds medical emergencies, supervises annual report preparations and facilitates the development of new health programs. We also provide the services of a part-time Family Health Care Outreach Worker to help illiterate and timid women access state subsidized health services.
Leadership Training and Scholarship Program apprentices assist in the Health Centre. They help book appointments, register patients, collect data, clean and prepare equipment for the doctors and clean the clinic.
