In 2004 we identified three high-risk families. A total of 17 children were living in one-room hovels with mothers who for reasons of ill health and cognitive impairment were unable to fend for their children. The best way to help these children was to provide them with safe homes close to their extended families, our project coordinators, their school, and the health centre. We built a duplex that comfortably houses two of the families and purchased furnishings for the third home built by a local Catholic Church.
In 2006 we provided two young, single mothers living in horrible conditions with homes of their own. One mother is an orphan with two little boys. The second young woman, the daughter of a brain-damaged alcoholic, was 16 and already had a one-year-old baby.
In 2007 we purchased a home for another young, single mother. She had been living in a small rented room next to a hill that was in danger of an imminent mudslide.
