In 2004, we renovated and furnished a small house that we are now using for our Sweet Haven Program. Sweet Haven, a children's day house, provides affection, supervision and three meals a day to some of the most under-nourished, neglected and abused children in the community. Aged 6 to 14, these youngsters come from homes where parents - overwhelmed by extreme poverty, mental illness, alcoholism and drug addiction - are unable to care for them.
We have employed Geanne Hora dos Santos, a calm, loving young woman, as "house mother". She cooks nourishing meals for these children, helps them get ready for school, welcomes their friends in to play and provides shelter in emergency situations. All of the children are visibly plumper and obviously fond of Geanne.
